How Gps Works

Over the last decades, car manufacturers have perfected usual car features and shifted to the installation of other latest technologies like portable auto GPS.  GPS is an abbreviation for global positioning system. It is a system which can pinpoint the accurate position of the vehicle and calculate the distance from one location to the location of the vehicle, as well as how much time it takes to get to the position of the vehicle.

The GPS consists of 3 segments: a space segment, a control segment and a user segment. There are more than two dozen satellites orbiting the earth daily. The maintenance of these satellites are funded by the government. The control segment in the GPS is some sort of a monitoring device from the earth that update and correct errors in the navigational messages of the satellite. The user segment operates as a receiver that receives radio waves from the satellites. It determines how far away the satellite is form the earth by determining how long it takes for the radio waves to travel from the satellite to the receiver.

The position of the car anywhere in the earth can also be located with the use of the GPS.Aside from that, it can also give the driver best travel routed by linking itself to a digital map.A monitor in the vehicle is installed with a digital map which shows the location of the car.By entering the target destination, the GPS calculates the optimal route and displays the information instantly. If the map is also well-detailed, then it can even show the nearest ATM machine, restaurant, hotel and gas station.

Best auto GPS even have auditory features which can dictate to the driver the directions to a particular address.GPS can also pinpoint the exact location of the stolen car.  Integrated with auto security system, it cansend instant messages to the owner’s email address or cellphone. This system is triggered when the alarm in the car is set off by forced opening of car doors and other tampering with the locks.

The owner of the car when outside, can also communicate directly with the GPS unit inside the car by phone or internet. He can start the engine or unlock the car if he forgot or lost his keys, solving the usual key problems.
