Sprint’s Best PDA Phone, The Evo

One of the best phones from Sprint is arguably the HTC Evo. Not only is it the best smart phone offered by Sprint, it is also one of the best Android powered devices on the cell phone market. The phone comes with the 4G network, which offers much greater performance than 3G, running up to ten times faster than the previous data network. 4G is new and is not yet available everywhere. The phone requires all customers to purchase the additional ten dollar 4G data pack, regardless of whether or not they are located in an area that offers 4G coverage. The phone has a front facing camera, which is great for video chat, as well as an eight megapixel camera. With a cool feature like Mobile Hot Spot, users can easily connect up to 8 devices to the internet.

The Evo is fairly large for a cell phone in this day and age, but this shouldn’t be surprising given its capabilities. This hefty device weighs in at six ounces and is about 5 inches tall. Still, the phone is fairly thin; half an inch. Because of the size of the extra large screen, 4.3 inches, users will overlook the fact that the Evo is a pretty big device. The size alone of the touch screen makes the on-screen keyboard easily functional, competing with the iPhone. HTC Evo Accessories are fairly sparse in the package that comes with the phone, lacking even a HTC Evo screen protector and a HTC Evo case, but the capabilities of the phone itself make up for this for the most part.

The user interface is a modification of Android; known as HTC Sense. This is one of the best modifications of the core operating system available, even more intuitive. Your schedule and email can be viewed through widgets that come ready with the phone. It informs you of the weather in your area, and allows you to organize your contacts into groups. Friend Stream keeps you updated on Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr, and just clicking on a contact lets you see all the recent communications you have had with them.

The phone was originally released with the Android 2.1 operating system, but it is now available with Android 2.2. The new operating system not only features Google maps, animated wallpapers, but other exciting new features as well. This was the first phone to be released with the specialized YouTube player, and the larger screen is great for watching videos. An HDMI port makes it possible for you to stream 720p videos to your television. A 1.3 megapixel camera sits on the front of the phone, enabling video chat to take place, and the 8 megapixel camera is capable of recording high definition video and high quality photographs.

The 4G speeds are a drastic improvement over 3G, allowing download speeds up to ten times as fast. The wireless hotspot feature allows the phone to connect up to eight devices to the internet. Even with 4G, Sprint TV is a bit choppy and laggy. It is considered to be a little misleading since the $10 4G data package is mandatory with the phone. While the Hot Spot feature is nice and all, the additional $30 to a very steep $80 plan is not worth it at all.

Batteries function for a long time up to twelve hours. Calls were very clear, and the video recordings beat most of the competition, although they couldn’t compete with digital camcorders. The Evo can handle almost anything thrown at it with its 1 GHz processor.

It is really difficult to compete with a phone like the Evo. Because of the 4G network, it has many qualities that other devices do not. Because of that many are left trying to emulate the Evo but HTC has done a great job and where they have succeeded, others have failed. With accessories to help the user get the most out of their smart phone experience the Evo is truly the best smart phone offered by Sprint.
