Linux Media Server For PS3 - Unlock the Possibilities

Many of us are unaware that their glossy new PS3 can be much more than merely a gaming console.  If you are in awe of your PS3, then you must be in for more nice surprises if you were to hear this.  From playing music to watching flicks, you can do a lot of things after you install Linux on PS3.

Well fortunately for us Sony are miles ahead of the pack.  They built the PS3 with Linux distro’s in mind.  And you can actually install Linux on your PS3 much the same way you would with your home PC.  And there’s nothing extra required, no extra contraptions or software to buy, just plug and play basically.  Well…  As plug and play as it gets with Linux anyway.  The best thing is, is that you do not have to lose what you already have on your PS3.  So games, music, anything installed on your hard drive is preserved.  The PS3 just turns to dual boot mode much the same as a windows PC.  So you may either select to go with your standard PS3 OS to play games, or switch to Linux to use it as a home PC.

It is a relatively straightforward process really, after you have backed up all of your saved files you can go on and format your PlayStation 3 Hard Disk.  This can be done easily by heading off to ‘System Settings’ ten to ‘Format utility’.  You may get asked whether you would like to format the hard disk, go forward and select ‘YES’.  Set partition setting to ‘Custom’ as this will permit you to distribute 10 gbs. for the Linux OS.

If you need to find more tips on how to install Linux on PS3, then you can find many online sources offering them.  You can now install Linux on your PS3 without trouble by understanding how My Friend installed it with assistance from a step-by-step DIY Guide which can be foudn at Linux PS3
