For many people a job as a game tester is one of their dream jobs. It does sound like a great opportunity; getting paid a small fortune just to play games. But the reality is that only a small number of people ever make a full time living from this job because it is very tough. Below are a few reasons why game testing might not be such a good profession to get in to.

 

• Don’t be fooled by the image of game testing as a job where you are paid to enjoy yourself. This job can actually be quite tough and you won’t spend the entire time playing games. You are going to have to write up technical reports for the game developer and a lot of people will find this aspect of the job quite challenging.

 

• When you are testing a game, a lot of the enjoyment is gone. You can’t just sit back and play the games because you are getting paid to test them. Some people find this to be very frustrating. If you are testing games for a while then you may find that you no longer enjoy playing them like you used to. For many top game testers, playing the games for fun would never enter their heads.

 

• You need to be highly disciplined in order to make it as a game tester. There is a lot of competition for this type of work, and if you can’t meet your deadlines then you won’t last long. This is a very tough job especially in the beginning. You probably won’t get many days off in the beginning and you will have to put in long hours.

 

• You probably won’t make very much money in the beginning. Most game testers will have to start off this job working for the very low paid game testing communities. But you can earn a good wage once you have a bit of experience behind you.
